Q: What can I do, as a parent, to help my child succeed in learning the English language?
A: Offer your child the opportunity to read daily. Daily reading practice is the best way to expose your child to the English language. You can offer different options such as magazines or books that interest him/her. Check their homework daily and ensure that your child is taking adequate time to study and complete his/her homework.
Q: What if I don't want my child to be in the EL Program?
A: Upon enrollment at any school within the State of California, a Home Language Survey is completed by the parents or guardians. It is state law, if another language other than English is listed on lines one, two or three, the student will be tested for English language proficiency. If your child does not score high enough to be classified as Initially English Proficient (I-FEP) he/she will be placed in an EL Program according to the results of the CELDT Test. Your child then will be tested yearly and can be reclassified after he/she has mastered the English language.
