What is the focus of the Menifee Union School District’s Distance Learning Plan?

Distance learning is instruction in which the student and instructor are in different places. This instruction does not have to occur at the same time. Our proposed plan includes flexibility — allowing students and teachers the ability to schedule learning at the time that is best for them.

  • Our focus for Distance Learning is to provide students enrichment opportunities, engagement with curriculum and review of grade level standards.
  • We want to support educational routines for students because structure is comforting, especially when our environment is uncertain. We will provide activities for art, physical movement ideas, and social and emotional activities for self-care.
  • We will communicate with families and be available to students. Teachers check their email regularly and communicate consistently with students and their parents.
  • Teachers are and will continue to collaborate to share best practices and support one another in distance learning.
  • Our district uses an accessible learning management system called Google Classroom and students can access Clever via their regular MUSD log-in.
  • Support for students’ social and emotional needs — These are uncertain times for our students, and they need us now more than ever. We want to provide students with the support they need to persevere through this challenge. Our counselors, nurses, psychologists, and others are available to help guide them through.
  • Grading — Distance learning is a shift for our students. We do not want to create unneeded anxiety surrounding our students’ grades. Under our plan, students will not receive a lesser grade than their current grade (as of March 13, 2020) as a result of engaging in distance learning during this unprecedented crisis.

Do students and teachers have to be on a firm schedule?

No. We know there’s a lot going on and that our schedules are different. We want to offer our students, teachers, and principals flexibility to schedule their instruction and learning time at a time that is most convenient for everyone.

• Is distance learning all online? Will print packets be available for pickup?

Yes. All learning materials are available online via Google Classroom or email. Parents and students can log into Google Classroom or contact their teachers for more information.

For Transitional Kindergarten only, weekly packets will be available for pick up at the District Education Center, located at 29775 Haun Road, Menifee, California 92586, from 9 to 11 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

• How will grading and report cards work?

A student’s grade will reflect student’s progress to March 13, 2020.  Digital Semester 2 Report cards will be available via Illuminate Parent Portal on June 5, 2020. Here is the link on how to access your student’s report card.

• How long will MUSD schools be closed?

MUSD school sites will remain closed through the end of the school year (June 5, 2020). Instruction will be delivered to every student through interactive teacher-led learning via Google Classroom starting April 14.

• What if a student needs to borrow a Chromebook? What can students access on the Chromebook?

Families can communicate the need to borrow a Chromebook directly with their school principal. Please note these Chromebooks are MUSD property and on loan during school closures. They will need to be returned when school is back in session.

Menifee Union School District supported online learning resources for English/Language Arts, Math, and even typing are available in the Clever Portal. Suggested skills based programs include typing.com, Achieve3000, DreamBox, Learning A-Z, Wonders, or StudySync.

• What if a student does not have Internet services to access online learning?

Please view the offers from Internet Service Providers.

• Will there be Promotions?

All students will promote to the next grade level as of the last day of school, June 5, 2020.  Due to the school closure status issued by the State of California, we do not plan to host Promotion Ceremonies at this time.

• What are the social-emotional resources available to students during school closure?

• Will standardized tests be canceled?

California has suspended all statewide testing for the 2019-20 school year; this includes MUSD.

• Is MUSD taking attendance during school closures?

MUSD is not recording regular daily attendance during school closure. Tracking participation in distance learning will be done separately from regular attendance accounting.

• Where can I get free meals during the school closure?

Drive-Thru meals for students will be available Monday thru Friday, free of charge for students enrolled in the Menifee Union School District, and their immediate family ages 18 years and younger.

  • Meals include lunch and a breakfast item
  • Meals must be consumed offsite
  • Meal pick up sites include Quail Valley Elementary School and Freedom Crest Elementary School, Monday - Thursday from 11:00AM - 12:00PM.

• How does my child use Google Classroom and other distance learning tools?

Please visit the Distance Learning Help page on our website for tutorials and resources on how to use Google Classroom, Google Meet, Clever, and more.

• How will my child with an IEP be supported during Distance Learning?

Your child will receive special education and related supports identified in the Individualized Education Program (IEP), to the greatest extent possible, through Google Classroom assignments and materials, emails, phone calls, and/or online meetings with your child and/or you. Please contact your child’s teacher or principal if you have questions or concerns related to your child’s use of interactive platforms.

Annual and transition IEP team meetings will be held virtually via either online conferencing or telephonically. During these meetings the District will make a recommendation of a Free and Appropriate Public Education that will begin once school is reopened in a face-to-face physical space. IEP Supports as they are being provided at this time are temporary in nature during this emergency situation and the updated IEP will include an offer of a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)  for your student in a traditional physical school setting.

• How will I pick-up my student’s belongings at school?

A plan is in development. Site Principals will contact families directly when the plan is finalized.
