Second grade is an important year of reviewing, extending and enhancing basic concepts in all subject areas. Children grow in independence as they progress through learning about their community, environment and world, math concepts, reading, spelling, writing and handwriting.
Reading instruction is presented in many interesting ways. Children develop vocabulary and comprehension skills. Letter sounds and letter combinations are learned in context of meaningful texts. Children’s literature and phonics-based stories are used to help children improve reading fluency.
The Writing Process is used to develop several types of writing. Children learn to write sentences and paragraphs to compose personal narratives, descriptions, journal entries, letters, directions and research reports. Using pre-writing, writing, revising, editing and publishing, learning is demonstrated through original stories. Manuscript handwriting is refined and cursive writing begins during second grade.
Problem-solving and computation are extended during second grade. Children will increase numeration knowledge, learn to use graphs, measure and use money. Math vocabulary is used to write about math. Addition and subtraction facts and strategies are strong emphases in second grade. Early multiplication readiness is part of the grade 2 curriculum.
