An Agreement between the District and the Menifee Teachers’ Association regarding furlough days and class size was ratified by the Governing Board on April 27, 2010.  The Agreement includes five furlough days for all teachers for the 2010/2011 school year.  This will reduce the student calendar by five days to 175 student attendance days.  The Agreement also includes an increase in kindergarten through third grade class size to a maximum of 28:1 (K – 3 classes will be capped at 25:1 in the smaller capacity classrooms at Ridgemoor Elementary School.)  Although we do not anticipate beginning the school year with classes of this size, the Agreement enables us to absorb future student growth without impact on the budget.  This translates into savings that will help us eliminate the estimated 8.6 million dollar deficit we are facing over the next three years due to ongoing cuts from the State.

"The Menifee Union School District continues to work toward our goals of protecting major programs and protecting jobs.  We did not send out pink slips and we've been able to preserve elementary and middle school music as well as home-to-school transportation.  We know how important all of this is to our community.  Our relationship with our Teachers' Association has always been positive and we are pleased that we were able to come to agreement in support of our budget," stated Superintendent Linda Callaway.

We are currently concluding the negotiations process with the Menifee Council of Classified Employees.

2/9/10

A presentation was given at the February 9, 2010 Governing Board Meeting regarding the impact of the Governor’s January Budget Proposal on the budget of the Menifee Union School District, which results in an 8.6 million dollar shortfall over three years.

Aligned with the ongoing District goals of protecting major programs and protecting jobs, staff presented recommendations to address the shortfall.

The Governing Board approved a package of recommended savings from management staff which included six furlough days in 2010/11, seven furlough days in 2011/12, elimination of four District Office management positions, and the reorganization and downsizing of District Office departments, resulting in an 11.1% decrease in management staff. The total cost savings from management, including staff reductions and furlough days, is 1.1 million dollars.

In keeping with the District goals stated above, additional recommended savings of 3.9 million dollars were also presented and approved. Click the link below to see full details of the budget presentation.
