Acute Illnesses

Children are prone to many acute illnesses. Some childhood illnesses require treatment while others are self-limiting and resolve on their own over time. Health office staff must follow guidelines on when to send a student home for symptoms that they observe. The health office staff will let you know whether or not a doctor's clearance in necessary to return to school. The health office staff cannot diagnose a student with an illness, please schedule an appointment with your child's doctor if you have any concerns.

You can find information on common childhood illnesses through reliable internet sources such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Chronic Health Conditions

Children who have been diagnosed with chronic health conditions may require support during their school day. Our health office staff is trained to care for children with chronic health conditions such as asthma, ADD/ADHD, diabetes, allergies, cystic fibrosis, etc. Classroom aides and other staff can also be trained to assist with specialized healthcare procedures such as GT feedings, ileostomy cares, etc. Our goal is that every child receive equal access to their education despite their health condition and that they learn to manage their health condition in their everyday life. Your credentialed school nurse may develop an individualized student healthcare plan (ISHP) to address the medical needs of your child during the school day. Additionally, children with certain health conditions may be eligible for further accommodations through Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act or an Individualized Education Plan. Contact your school administrator or credentialed school nurse for more information.
